LAUREL VIEW RESIDENCE

HOLLYWOOD HILLS, CA

5000 SF

This single family two story hillside residence is comprised of 4 bedrooms, 4-1/2 baths, media room, indoor/outdoor water pond, indoor/outdoor fireplaces, and a private roof deck off of the master bedroom.

The project places an emphasis on blurring the line between indoors and out. The clients expressed an interest in a design, which from the inside looking out, was minimal and unassuming, yet from the outside looking in, voiced a sense of stature. To meet these design concerns, a series of framed views of Los Angeles and the abutting hillside were generated which, when experienced sequentially from space to space, each tell a different story of the city itself. These framed views were created and focused through the use of a controlled palette of materials, well-distributed natural light, connected outdoor living spaces and by incorporating outdoor features within the home.

This project also encourages a sense of intimacy and feeling of separation from the private spaces (i.e. master bedroom, master bath, private roof deck off of master bedroom) to the more public spaces (dining room, kitchen, and living room). The overlap between the spatial strategies between indoor/outdoor combined with the concept of public/private, helped take optimum advantage of natural light and cross ventilation.
